OZAMIZ CITY -- Ozamiz Cotta got huge double-double numbers from Billy Bansil and ex-pro Christian Nicdao to beat Far Eastern Insurance-backed Cavite, 78-73, Tuesday and capture the 2005 Panasonic-NBC national basketball title before an overflow crowd at the Gov. Angel Medina Sr. gym.
Bansil topscored with 20 on top of 14 rebounds and Nicdao, who was eventually named tournament MVP, recorded 17 points and 12 boards as Ozamiz led from start to finish to end their two-game losing woes to Cavite at homecourt.
“It’s sweet to win at home. We’re emotionally overwhelmed with the victory and the Ozamiz people’s support,” said coach Albert Calvo.
The Insurers of Bacoor Vice Mayor Edwin Malvar and strong supporter Gov. Ireneo “Ayong” Maliksi converted only four of 27 3-point shots, with main man Marvin Ortiguerra finishing with only 11 points and five rebounds.
NBC president Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla failed to make the awarding ceremony due to business commitments but his
secretary general, Tito Plama, expressed satisfaction at the league’s successful run in its second season.
Nicdao was joined in the Mythical Five by Ortiguerra, Tribu Sugbu’s Ronald Bucao, Valencia’s Nat Cruz and Iligan’s Marco Fajardo.
Other awardees were Valencia’s Eliazar Berami, Rookie of the Year, Tribu’s Doroteo Almacin, most improved player; and Valencia mentor Arvin Martinez, coach of the year.
