(US, 2005, d. Mike Bigalow)
For those who have been waiting eagerly and patiently for Rob Schneider to reincarnate his character, Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo, the wait has finally ended – with very few bangs and some whimpers.
This 82 minute film is really an extended sex joke, somewhat provocative because of its subject, but not really much of a joke. There are some laughs (mainly at Europeans slanging the US) but the film begins with leers and continues in that vein. Some of the jokes and the slapstick are really very corny and/or very crass, some of which would embarrass a ten year old trying to tell them.
Deuce, whose potential gigolo charms and talents are not very evident in Rob Schneider’s presence and performance, finds himself in Amsterdam where, to his amazement, drugs and prostitution are legal. Someone disagrees and is killing off the great gigolos of Europe (the publicity says this is a riff on the film Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe but there is little taste here). The venue and heroics (like Kevin Costner saving Whitney Houston at the Oscars in The Bodyguard) are the annual awards for the gigolos – where, ultimately, there is a bang.
Most of it is sblack person comedy with Eddie Griffin supplying the more blatant side of things and Jeroen Krabbe, perhaps happy at being able to make a film in his native Holland, takes it all very seriously (despite the crass situations he us put in) as a police inspector with a mission. No awards for this one.
